[by David Kaplan and Rafat Ali] Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Facebook are working on porting the social network on to Nokia handsets in a major way, we have learned. The Facebook placement could be as prominent as the YouTube button on the main screen of iPhone, our sources indicate. Also, the deal involves giving Facebook a major slot within Nokia retail products’ displays.
But another factor elevates this beyond just-another-social-net-on-a-phone deal: Our sources have indicated that the discussions have involved Nokia purchasing a stake in the company, but these are in very early stages. This makes sense in light of Facebook’s recent strategic funding by Sawmer Brothers, in an effort to expand in Europe. The Nokia-Facebook deal would give the social network instant big-time mobile distribution: Nokia is the world’s largest maker of mobile phones. More after the jump…
A senior Nokia executive, speaking on background, declined to go into details about the pact with Facebook: “There is talk of a partnership in the works… it’s safe to say we’re testing the waters and things still have to be worked out.” E-mails and phone calls seeking comment on the deal from Nokia and Facebook representatives were not returned.
Nokia has of late been working on a slew of services for the mobile, including its mobile web service Ovi, its mobile social network Mosh (which hasn’t really rocked the world since its launch last year), and its recent spate of acquisitions in the larger media applications space. In October last year, it bought digital mapping provider Navteq for $8.1 billion to eventually offer customers location-based services. Also in October, it announced a deal to provide a year’s free access to Universal’s music catalog on some Nokia phones. And it bought three other smaller companies last year: Avvenu (file sharing on mobiles and between mobile-PC); Twango (media sharing service for about $100 million); and Enpocket (mobile advertising and marketing services).
Would be interesting to see how Nokia’s own social media efforts pan out versus this deal it is working on with Facebook…
im writing this as i watch live earth broadcast on msn and i see the writing on the wall
- if we dont wise up NOW to the dangers of climate change, all that we have built until now will have to be sacrificed to .. but im no conservation evangelist iw ill just do what i can in my life
- the second sentence on the wall is - how do you switch from london to hong kong to johanessburg in the space of 10 minues ? you use video feeds over IP
- like this
- live feed, recorded feed - streamed to your cellphone, PDA, laptop, set-top box, desktop,
- which you can then share wil other immediately like im trying to do now,
- which you can use in your daily life as coversation peices, information, research, communication, collaboration, conferencing
- the primary purpose of imaging is not the excitement of moving pictures but the subsequent, underlying, adjacent, related and productive information around it
- if busiensses move fast enough to embrace video links, travel can be cut by over half, thats an average of over 1000 million per year
- money we could all pledge to help preserve our planet ?

this is the warner bros. web site for the 1998 flick you ´ve got mail
today a movie website looks like this
as we see somethings dont change but some things do, they havent stopped making sappy movies but the kind of websites used to promote them havechaneged dramatically
but this post isnt even about movies, it is about collaboration software like IWM and how back in 1988 e-mail was considered the definitive kool, while today well e-mail is a bother, not a tool
today mail comes bundled with collaborative work spaces that grant access rights to online resources, shared schedulers, access to conferencing resources, they are sometimes linked to blogs, photo and video sharing services,
mail or atleast a way to update people in your user group is now being integrated into mashups and twitter like applications
facebook has its message board and flyers and walls, so is the e mail finally dead ?
yes,
it does look like e - mail is definitely been overtaken by
collaboration services that include instant messaging and even instant
file transfer ombined with ability to leave notes and store them in
blogs and forums means that what people will soon be firing up soon as
they sit down at their PC will be this
and not this

flex was recently released as an Open Source project allowing developers to add what they could- Flex enables you to create dynamic, interactive applications that can bind with data objects natively and that runs on all major browsers and operating systems.
you can read more on the technologies behind Flex here and a wealth of white-papers are here
the best thing about Flex is not that it is Open Source but that its core is XML - like , so it is very lightweight and easy to work with and deploy, to build business tollls that must be access on PDAs for example - stock applications, conferencing apps
combined with this is the power of Adobe Live Cycle Data Services if you are using the paid Flex Builder (an Eclipse based IDE) making this a far more powerful tool set that the recent MSFT release called Silverlight

everbody has a blog these days or is thinking of getting one, a well maintained blog provides interfaces to other blogs, data sharing, data mining, advertising, search,
with blogs one gets away form the herd mentatitly to thinking for oneself and publishing fro, home or work - imho thats why blogs are vital, they provide a multi-faceted look at the same person -
the worker, the thinker, the parent, the spouse,
when people expose many facets of themselves to others the relationships tend to get deeper and also more complex, but the best fallout from this is that people will now / have already - feel much greater freedom in personal and social life because they are able to express myriad feelings
as people evolve from have-centric to be-centric, as we learn more about the world around us and how similar we all are the number and kid of jobs available in the ” IT industry ” will change and increase - the line between IT and entertainment will blur, if it already has not, scobles blog, or youtube are examples of IT
sure we will always have purely commercial or purely corporate blogs, but its the experimental ones that will count, the ones not afraid of change, the will offer not content or entertainment, but a research lab envt to aloow us to grow how we interact and maybe even why,

- google serves 2 billion plus searches a day as of Feb 2004, today it is probably two or even three times that - that means effectively that could could well be serving 2 billion plus advertisements per day,
the frequency and randomness that the searches take place are not
google controlled but google collect those stats providing consultation
to advertisers and publishers on how best to optimise their adspend -
google as made itself indispensable as a repository of tags and keywords, the mothod of how we organise ourselves in this world and thus the world around us
google has a map of how people interact with each other, what the realtionships are and how they evolve,
google is not a static entity but a dynamic one that we, the users are shaping, it is a snapshot of our planet
as it organises our sights, sounds, ideas, memories it would do well to offer us ways - news, social networking, services, to then share these conveniently with others either commercially or non commercially and also remember " trivialties " for us so we can find new ways t use google that can then lead to more new goodies offered the Big G -

we all knew it was going to happen so when trond put it up on the interwix site it was time to break out the champagne and toast the future
log on to a demo here -
i have been promsing a ” ton of info ” and it hasnt been a ton i fear, i have been so busy preparing the ton i have not posted any of it,
so for the patient dearest
get a load of
instant web meetings - experience general overview of features
instant web meetings - virtual experience user manual
instant web meetings - service details - business user
hope you are all having a blast cos within 8 weeks we will have another ” rock your block ” announcement followed by another in september
im hitting the road -
i will be in munich, in bolzano, in zurich, in baden, in vienna, in graz over the next 6 months evangelising about instant web meetings and its many unique features
ie.
- we are one of about only half-a-dozen of the 100 + here that dont need you adjust your firewall or ur router or open ports - in fact when you use instant web meetings experience the useage is as simple as using hotmail, we say, enter ur name and ur pwd and ur good to start taling and viewing others
- IWM runs over standard TCP / IP ports - ir you dont need to expose no standard non ISO certified ports to run ur apps, IT managers know that opening no ISO ports is an inviotation to get hacked, and we cover that base thouroughly, with IWM your rock solid secure,
- we have presenter, training and conferencing mode available for ALL
USERs within a single UI - which in fact menas that you get 3 full apps
for the price of one - with webex
or digital samba etc you get just one app and if you need another you need to pay extra, - we have full feature project meeting-management tools integrated, with our competition you need to get this for a paid extra pls read this ver carefully what web ex sells as Shared Workspaces or Event Center under seperate licensing and fee structures is ALL BUNDLED INTO ONE SINGLE EASY TO USE APP - - you just clikc a tab and viola your in a new application, youc an move your cam, your docs, presentations all of it with a few (always less than 4) mouse clicks
- the ONLY place we have a bifurcation is that we have divided our offering very smartly by WAY OF DEPLOYMENT ie. a business does nto deploy its applications like an educational institution, one deploys it to REDUCE REDUNDANCY in the work place and IMPROVE INTELLIGENCE, the other deploys it to ENCOURAGE INTERACTION WITHOUT A RIGID PROFIT / LOSS blinder in mind - to break that down the educational apps we deploy are built to scale laterally, the business apps scale vertically and only rarely laterally,
- we are ONE OF ONLY TWO that have integrated SMS capabilities
- we are probably the only one that has a fully modular 100% SOAP / XML / XSLT data bridge between the data and the presentation layer and BETWEEN each data module, so if you say to us ” can u plug in IWM to Sugar CRM within 8 weeks ? ” the answer is a resounding yes ! -
- or if u want the Control Panel to send ur PDA an interface … hmm now thats a thought
- WE ARE COMPLETELY REBRANDABLE
- we include RMA, QA, FORUMS, BLOG, INQUIRY, SITE STATS, Questionnaire Builder, Quiz and Portal modules which none of our peers have
- if that were not enough, we allow access from the control panel to google maps and google docs
- and we have an integrated RSS news module that can call in news from any web site on the internet
pls use this form to get yourself a demo

- to me the fundamental difference is the following - webex is not SOAS - software as a service, instead it is software as an installable, which means that each time the OS you are using is upgraded, you need to re install the meeting manager, from this follows that you an ONLY participate in a meeting from ONE machine - no matter what OS you are on webex is probably available
- to me this makes webex a retarted system no matter what it can do - if you need to download and install an executable to run a service you have started the process of compromising your machine
- webex is written in JAVA - a slow, insecure platform that was just about acceptable on secure, high -speed intranets -
- but intranet based applications are no good if you want to carry on commercial activities with people that are not approved to logon and execute services on your intranet cant access it
- in order to offer secure " wide area " access JAVA is no good, bcos the files needed to execute complex operations are just too large, making them slow and thu open to malicious sniffs
- to make matters much worse (for web ex and its users) using an installable means that bound to a machine, you cannot join a meeting if you want to from home or from a colleagues machine
instant web meetings is 100 % Software as a Service, ie there are NO downloads, you are truly 100 % OS independent, and you can use it from ANY computer that has an internet connection and a web-browser - you do need a download but ONLY if you want to share your desktop / an application with another meeting participant, not otherwise -
